We're still alive...BARELY!!

So its been a week since i've blogged last...but didn't want you to think i've given up on blogging...its just that the parnell household has been hit hard!

We are now going on day 12 of both kids having bad colds with lots of snot : ) ...both have had fevers off and on since the onset...both have wanted constant holding...i've been giving tylenol and motrin around the clock...i've had griffy at the doctor twice and yesterday they discovered he had an ear infection and was started on antibiotics...(after his nap he kept just screaming and crying and want up, but as soon as i held him he squirmed down and layed on the floor crying...soon we were both in tears so i called the MD out of desperation...)and if all that isn't bad enough, both kids started having diarrhea and the stomach bug last night!! so now i'm up to my elbows in snot and poop!!!

not to be a total downer though- here are some positives...brent felt bad enough for me that he brought me flowers on friday. beautiful red tulips. and i got to have a girls night out on friday with our new small group from church - i loved sitting down to a meal that i didn't cook and one that i actually got to enjoy and that i could carry on whole conversations with grownups!!!

i'll be back to blogging once we are healthy again!

Rainy Day Blues

So today is day 2 of cold and rainy weather. Yesterday we actually were able to get "out" - we went to the indoor playground at the mall and got chic-fil-a....but we have nowhere to go today and its already been a long day for everyone! It is currently 11 AM - and we have read books, played babies, done puzzles, colored, played with stickers...and the kids are now watching lion king! Everyone is restless and whiny....please pray that nap time comes soon!!!

avery "playing" stickers

griffy's first coloring experience (and he didn't eat the crayons as expected!)

Painted Nails

Brent took avery upstairs this morning to get her dressed so that she could help him mow the grass...and when they came back downstairs, they had a surprise to show me...

Daddy had painted her nails!

(this is the first time she has had her fingernails painted so she thought she was big stuff!)

The mind of a toddler

So the kids and i were driving in the car this morning and avery started talking about going to the beach with gammy (brent's mom). and then she adds on that pop (brent's dad who passed away last year) was going too. her and i have had this discussion a million times but it goes right over her head...here it is:

Me - avery, pop won't be there just gammy. remember that pop is in heaven with jesus?

Avery - is god there too?

Me - yes

Avery - where is heaven?

Me - its way up high in the sky

Avery - i don't like to go way up high. i just want you to hold griffin and me when we go high.

Me - avery, we aren't going high. we are driving down to gammy's house.

Avery - but we have to go high to see pop and gammy and jesus.

Me - we don't get to see pop for a while. we are going to gammy's house, that's where she is.

Avery - can we just call pop?

Me - i wish we could avery.

Avery - don't you have your phone?

It is so sweet and so innocent to hear her questions and watch as she tries to figure things out. I wish i had a good way of explaining things to her...but I'm very thankful that she still remembers and talks about her "pop."

Words of an Almost 3 Year Old

Here are few things that Avery has said to me or that I have overheard her saying recently...

1. While driving in the car with griffin screaming i heard "i don't like whiny babies."

2. When using the bathroom this morning, the door pops open and avery asks, "is everything okay in here?"

3. Avery was sitting at the table and announced "momma, i'm waiting patient for you."

4. After griffin fell - she started patting his back saying "its o-quay buddy, it wasn't that bad."

5. out of nowhere, "momma, griffin has a bruise on that side too." (she's heard that plenty...)

6. on monday at school her teacher asked her about her weekend and what she had done, and all avery would say was "griffy looked really cute! " (no mention of being a flower girl!)

Pictures from Haley's Wedding

Haley and Joel's Wedding

we had a wonderful time this past weekend in atlanta celebrating haley and joel's wedding. All my siblings were able to come - so we had 23 people staying at mom and mikes!!! lots of mattresses on the floors and a pack-n-play in every bathroom! we stayed up late and enjoyed lots of conversation around the big round kitchen table. the wedding itself was wonderful and everything went smoothly. haley looked gorgeous (of course) and joels dad did an excellent job officiating. my brother justin/anna's son patrick was a ring bearer and avery was a flower girl - they were adorable and did great. it was a busy weekend but lots of fun. pictures to follow!

16 months and 100% BOY!

Griffin Patrick -

another month has somehow managed to sneak by. and with the month came more words, broader understanding, and many more falls! you continue to be 100% boy: running everywhere you go; climbing on everything in sight; throwing sand; banging sticks. this morning i came back from taking avery to the bathroom and found you kneeling ON the kitchen table, tossing the fruit out of the basket piece by piece!! AHHHH!

Your vocabulary is slowly increasing - you will pat the couch and say "sit" when you want on it. you call balloons "ball;" sometime you actually say "milk;" and you can say quack quack, moo, and woof to the correct animals. you do sign language for more/eat, all done, please, thank you, and milk.

you enjoy sitting on my lap and pointing to eye, nose, mouth, ear when i say them. you're really good and pointing them out on my face but can't always find your own.

avery continues to be the highlight of you life! you are thrilled to see her every morning and every day after nap. i'm pretty sure you get more excited for her than for mommy or daddy! you like to harass her by stealing her stuff and running away with it. you also love to pull the bows or barrettes out of her hair. but all is fair in love and war because she still rips thing out of your hands when she wants it!

we are down to 1 nap a day on most days. now if we could just make that nap long enough to keep you from being grumpy tired by 6 PM we'd be set!

we love you griffy!!

2 years and 9 months???

Avery -

Is it even possible? are you really 2 years and 9 months old already??? wow! you are both a joy and a challenge these days! you have spent the last 9 months as a 100% 2-year old! you are extremely independent, want to do everything your way, and love attempting to do whatever mommy/daddy are doing. you can be smiling one minute and crying the next.

You get to go to "school" one day a week and you love it! you love to list the names of your classmates over and over. you are so proud to show me what you "created" in school every week and then hang it on the fridge for all to see. your teachers always brag about how sweet and well-mannered you are.

you like to play shy for about 5 minutes when you meet new people but then your little chatter-box self kicks in! you love new friends and will stop anyone who will listen to you. every time we are out, you find a stranger who will pause long enough to hear your stories. your 2 best friends are carter and caroline and you squeal every time you see them and then run to give them hugs.

you are proficient at just about everything you attempt now. you can climb ladders, rock walls, and all the playground equipment with ease and you prefer to use the "big girl" swings. you and griffin both could spend hours in the sandbox.

we still try to get you to nap every day - but sometime you play in your bed for 2 hours and never really fall asleep. i'm thankful though that you play so well up there and are content with just your blanket, bunny, and a few books.

you are griffy are really good buds. i've overheard you say " i love you buddy" to him 2 or 3 times lately. (melt my heart!) and you make up games together and love to play chase. he gets so excited when you wake up in the morning and from your nap - he smiles and runs to hug you!

i can't believe you are almost 3! you are a sunshine in our lives avery! we love you!

Daddy's Little Helper

We had a beautiful weekend and Brent was eager to get out and work in the yard. Avery is really into "working" and doing whatever Brent is doing so she was thrilled with the prospect of getting to mow the grass. She followed him around the yard almost the entire time he was mowing. It was so cute to see!

Another good recipe

here is a recipe that my friends christa and amy both told me about. its really easy and quick; it makes a lot but can be frozen; thought i'ld share it with you...

Baked Chicken and Rice with Black Beans
1- 10oz pkg yellow rice mix
1 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
1/2 cup chopped carrot
1 TBSP olive oil
2 cups cooked cubed chicken
1 15 oz can black beans, rinsed and drained
1 10 oz can rotel, undrained
2 cups grated mont jack cheese

preheat oven 350. prepare rice according to package directions. meanwhile, saute onion, bell pepper, and carrot in hot oil over medium heat for about 10 minutes or until tender. combine hot cooked rice, sauted veggies, chicken, beans, rotel, and 1 1/2 cups cheese in large bowl. spoon into a greased 9 x 13 or 3 quart baking dish. sprinkle with remaining cheese. bake covered at 350 for 30 minutes; uncover and bake 10 minutes or until cheese is melted. enjoy!

a LITTLE more snow!

over the past 2 weeks or so, our bradford pears have started to bud and the daffodils have poked through the ground...the temps have been in the 65 range...and we have loved it!! and then we awoke this morning to an almost slightly white yard!

Avery was really excited but i was not. i'm thankful we live in the south, where we can get snow in minimal intervals. other than the excitement for the kids, i don't really enjoy it - it takes 10 minutes to get them all bundled up, avery is bound to need to pee only minutes after going outside, griffy gets mad because he can't function in mittens....and then by the time they have had enough, it takes another 10 minutes to get them completely changed into dry clothes and avery is in tears because she is soooo cold!!!

whoa! exhausting.... but i would feel like a bad mother if i didn't take them out at all so we spent about 45 minutes outside today. we really don't have that much snow, so avery didn't understand why her snow angels weren't working and why we couldn't sled down the hill!

i guess all this is to say that i am simply ready for picnics, pools, playgrounds and sunshine!!!
